San Thomas Basilica
San Thome Basilica is a Roman Catholic basilica .It was built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers, and rebuilt again with the status of a cathedral by the British in 1893. The British version still stands today. It was designed in Neo-Gothic style, favoured by British architects in the late 19th century.
San Thome Basilica at the south end of Marina Beach was named after Saint Thomas (Doubting Thomas). It is believed that he had come to Chennai in 52 AD and was killed at St. Thomas Mount just outside the city in 78 AD. It was built in the 16th Century by the Portuguese, in 1896 it was made a basilica.
Additional Information
The beautiful stained glass window at the basilica portrays the story of St. Thomas and the central hall have 14 wooden plaques depicting scenes from the last days of Christ.
The cathedral also has a 3 feet high statue of Virgin Mary believed to have been brought from Portugal in 1543.
